What happens to original files?

Understand output files, in-place metadata updates and source-file deletion.

Before starting a batch, check the preset, destination and Delete Source Files setting. Rules can change these choices for individual videos.

Conversion versus metadata update

A conversion workflow writes a processed output. A metadata-update workflow can edit the existing MP4/M4V file itself; the rename variant can also change its name. Do not assume every job leaves an untouched second copy of the source.

When source deletion is enabled

After successful conversion, iFlicks can remove the source files used by the job. It first attempts to move them to the Trash. If moving to the Trash fails, it can delete them directly. This is especially important for storage locations that do not provide a usable Trash, but you should never rely on recoverability solely because the setting refers to deleting source files.

Removing an item from the processing queue and deleting its source file are different operations.

A safe first run

  1. Keep a separate backup of files you cannot replace.
  2. Leave source deletion disabled while testing.
  3. Use an explicit output destination and check applicable rules.
  4. Process one file, then test the result's picture, sound, subtitles, chapters and metadata.
  5. Only enable automatic cleanup once you understand the complete workflow.

If you cannot find an original, check its source location, the output destination and Trash. Stop further automatic processing or cleanup while investigating. A processed copy is not a substitute for a backup of material you need to preserve.
